Scarning Primary School Mosaics

A Commission Celebrating Local Nature and The School's Creativity

In early 2024, Scarning Primary School commissioned Mosaic Memories to lead a bespoke mosaic project celebrating their local wildlife. Inititiated by now-retired art teacher Melissa Thomas and developed in close collaboration with Headteacher Nick King, Carolyn tailored a creative process welcoming every child—from Reception to Year 6—into the making.

Tasked by their tutors, each year group began by drawing the creatures, wee beasties and plants they observed in their school and nature garden. Inspired by the the spirit of the resulting lively sketches, Carolyn created seven stylised mosaic designs: a Ladybird, a Dandelion, Daisy, Red Kite, Red Admiral Butterfly, Oak Leaves with Acorns, and a Common Garden Snail.

The workshop structure was designed around the school’s needs and rhythms, ensuring every child could participate meaningfully. Over the course of a week, 400 pupils took turns gluing, grouting, and polishing their group’s mosaic creature. Staff were involved throughout, and the whole team made us and the general atmosphere feel genuinely welcoming and relaxed—the children were a delight to work with.

Unveiled at the start of the summer term, the mosaics now brighten the school hall’s exterior, standing as a vibrant testament to nature, creativity, and school community's collaborations.
